DONATE YOUR NEW OR SLIGHTLY USED SOCKS (Biggest need is for Mens, Womens and Early Teens)
FOR DISTRIBUTION TO THE HOMELESS OF MANATEE & SARASOTA COUNTY
~Socks are the #1 Clothing need of the Homeless~
I was Blessed to be involved in The Blessing Bag Project's Christmas Day BBQ a couple years ago.
The blessing bags were full of toiletries and we gave out toys for kids and other non-perishable food items. It was the most warming way to spend Christmas Day!! I feel so very honored to have been involved! One volunteer brought his guitar and we were serenaded with gospel and Christmas tunes! It was just fabulous and I thank Betsy Plante of the Blessing Bag Project for letting me participate!!
One of the things that struck me the most was the excitement in their eyes at receiving a pair of socks! Those things we take for granted are prized possessions! I was so disappointed that we ran out that I went to the store, bought some more and went to the Salvation Army and gave them out. A couple of the people there were actually ones that got to the BBQ too late ~ They were so appreciative!
My grandfather had a thing he said a lot: "I complained I had no shoes until I met a man with no feet." It was his way of telling us to appreciate what we have. The irony is that, as an Emergency Room Physician Assistant with some experience in vascular medicine, I have seen too many people lose feet due to improper care. Every day I am in the ER I see at least one patient with foot wounds due to improper care and inadequate protection from the elements. And imagine walking outside in them all day! Add cold weather and I can only think how miserable that must be! Socks wear out fast ~ particularly when you are on the streets. I can think of no better way to help out than to help fill this HUGE need!
